Mental fitness isn’t ‘tips and tricks’

Becoming mentally stronger takes time and effort, but the rewards are life-changing.

People sometimes ask, ‘can you just give the tips and tricks for mental fitness?’

Sounds a good question, right?  Like ‘I’m very busy right now, just give me the hacks so I can do this quickly and easily’ (and then get back to my stressful life).

Whether we like it or not, mental fitness doesn’t work this way. Mental  fitness and personal growth can’t be reduced to the simple answers that we often see on social media.

To become mentally fit we need to first have some insights about who we are, and who we want to be. Otherwise, we will keep trying to be what others want us to be, and this will eventually lead to a mental health crisis, probably depression.

The ‘inner work’ of finding out what we really want from life requires time and effort.  Often, we have to get help from others to see our potential, overcome past conditioning and deal with our inner demons.

When we are clear who we are, where we are going, and the positive difference we are going to make, then it’s about playing the game of life well, every day. It’s about having thinking and behavioural habits that are good for us personally. We will need to find  coaches and mentors who are living life well and already making a difference. They can show us the subtle art of building our strengths and knowing our limits.  A coach or mentor might show up in your workplace, your family, community.

Playing the game of life well is like playing a sport to professional level. It’s about training and learning each day and being consistent.

Its also a team sport. We can’t do it on our own. We need a supportive community and the right coaches and mentors for us.

The first step to mental fitness is working out who we want to be. This will make the hard work of staying on track with our mental fitness rewarding and doable with a bit of effort.
